New England Aquarium Shark and Ray Touch Tank

Aquatic Environments contracted directly with the New England Aquarium for the design and installation of the Shark and Ray Touch Tank Exhibit, which opened the first week of April 2011.

This exhibit features Sharks and Rays in a mangrove themed tank surrounded by shallow edges and viewing windows, allowing visitors to experience a close encounter with these animals. This is an innovative large touch tank exhibit that allows visitors to gently stroke Cownose Rays, Bonnethead Sharks, Atlantic Rays and Epaulette Sharks as they swim gracefully through the crystal clear water.

Columbus Zoo Polar Frontier

Aquatic Environments Inc. was hired as a subcontractor to Thomas & Marker Construction Co. to develop a comprehensive Life Support design and then, subject to approval from the Columbus Zoo, build a state of the art Life Support System (LSS) for the Polar Bear and Brown Bear exhibits.

The new 1.3 acre yard was specially designed to be the ultimate Polar Bear Habitat. The Polar Bear pool is 176,000 gallons and has guest viewing above and below the water surface. The Polar Frontier project was completed in December 2010.

During the design phase for the Polar Bear Exhibit, a 7,600-gallon water feature was added as habitat enrichment for the Polar Bears. Aquatic Environments took on this complicated additional scope, which required additional complex engineering to achieve this critical new exhibit feature. A key advantage to working with Aquatic Environments, with over 40 years experience in the LSS industry, is that we understand that all the needs of the facility are not always fully understood until after the work has begun. Our flexible approach allows for changes in scope while keeping change orders to a minimum. Often these changes result in no additional cost to the client.

New England Aquarium Off Site Holding Facilities

Aquatic Environments Inc. was contracted to design and install a state of the art Life Support System for the New England Aquarium Rescue and Collection Holding facility located in Quincy Massachusetts. This new center will also house quarantine facilities. The first phase of this project was completed February 2010.

This new facility resides in a 240’X100’ building formally used for shipbuilding. Currently 18,000 square feet is active space for Holding, Quarantine, and Rescue Rehab. 24 rescued Sea Turtles, 9 baby Bonnethead Sharks, and a school of Cownose Rays were among the first residents of this new $3.7 million facility.

New England Aquarium Penguin Tray Exhibit

Aquatic Environments contracted directly with the New England Aquarium for the design and installation of the new Penguin Life Support System completed in early August 2008.

The New England Aquarium Penguin exhibit contains more than 80 birds located in the massive first floor of the aquarium. This exhibit contains multiple species of Penguins living in more than 150,000 gallons of salt water with artificial rock outcroppings.

Aquatic Environments designed and built the new Life Support System for this central feature at the aquarium. Included in this design were custom Aquatic Environments protein skimmers, Fybroc pumps, Paragon sand filters, FRP basket strainers, an Ozone Generator, and a custom Bio filter using an existing LSS filtration bay.

New England Aquarium Giant Ocean Tank

The New England Aquarium is one of the most prominent and popular aquariums in the Untied States. Founded in 1969 on the city’s waterfront, shortly after the aquarium opened it featured the Giant Open Ocean tank. At the time it was largest circular ocean tank in the world. This exhibit is located in the central open atrium of the main building. The cylindrical 200,000-gallon tank measures 23’ tall and 40’ across. This exhibit simulates a Caribbean coral reef, and is home to Sharks, Sea Turtles, Stingrays, Eels, and Barracuda.

The New England Aquarium contracted with Aquatic Environments, Inc. to design and install Life Support System (LSS) upgrades for the Giant Open Ocean exhibit (GOT).  This project was completed in June of 2010.  The primary filtration for the GOT was large gravity sand filters located in the basement with an aeration/degassing tower housed on the 4th floor.
